Electricians Warn About The Dangers of DIY Electrical Repair

Electrical repairs are one of the most common troubleshooting and maintenance tasks a home may need. Whether it is routine maintenance work or a significant issue, electrical repairs are unavoidable, especially for aging properties.

For most homeowners, reaching out to a residential electrician is the default reaction once an electrical issue occurs. Some homeowners though think twice about hiring a professional especially when they think that they can handle what they believe is a minor electrical issue.

Why some homeowners self-troubleshoot electrical issues

Some homeowners think that self-troubleshooting or Do-It-Yourself electrical maintenance and repair is a practical way of saving on home maintenance costs. After all, hiring a licensed residential electrician does not come cheap. Once they think that an electrical issue is minor, they tend to take on the matter especially if they have tools around the house.

There are several reasons why these homeowners decide to do DIY electrical repair and maintenance. Some do it because they think they can and it is just practical to carry out such maintenance work on their own. Some on the other hand do not have enough money to pay for the services of a licensed residential electrician. While others take it on as a challenge, given the myriad of online tutorials that abound on the Internet.

The Dangers of DIY Electrical Repair

What some homeowners do not realize is that the risk of self-troubleshooting electrical issues far outweighs any benefit of DIY electrical repair. Yes, there may be advantages to doing the repairs on their own such as no-waiting time, no labor cost to pay, and no strangers at home, but these advantages are not enough to say that DIY electrical repair is the way to go.

First, electricity is volatile. Licensed electricians studied, trained, and took licensure examinations to prove to everyone that they can efficiently and safely handle electricity and everything related to it. A homeowner, unless he is a licensed electrician, has zero knowledge when it comes to electrical handling, troubleshooting, and safety.

Secondly, electricians have the appropriate equipment to carry out electrical repairs. Electrical repairs call for specialized tools and equipment for accuracy and efficiency of repairs. Without it, the repairs will not be as safe and reliable.

Electrical Safety is Key

Licensed electricians have Personal Protective Equipment or PPE that keeps them safe while working on repairs. Homeowners simply do not have all the appropriate PPE needed for electrical repairs, exposing themselves and other people to electrical injuries, and even possible electrocution.

Lastly, professional electricians have the expertise to conduct the repair. As they say, a professional can do things right the first time. The risk of having damaged appliances and electrical fixtures are zero to minimal. DIY electrical repairs carried out by homeowners may take longer to carry out, could end up damaging appliances and the electrical system, and if it works, it surely is just a band-aid solution.
